Half way… we’ve made it (just)!
As of Tuesday we are half way through the experience, with only 8 weeks to go. Looking back, in the past 8 weeks we’ve seen a fair bit of Newfoundland; visiting Cape Spear, drinking Sundance dry, finally seeing Downtown (in the day), and skiing at Marble Mountain (and, miraculously, making the bus back to St. Johns).
But with all the fun of midterm break behind us, work is inevitably building back up. Midterm exams were one thing – now finals are quickly approaching. Still, we’re managing to squeeze in the odd few nights downtown, at the cinema, or house/flat parties. I should also mention the extreme temperatures, down to -12, we’ve been experiencing – whilst also seeing the most sunshine so far on trip!
I’m doubtful it’s a result of the temperature but as this cold front began the on-campus residences’ electricity cut out. This meant no heating, no cooker, no microwave, no kettle, no laptop and – worst of all – no internet. The electricity was out all day on Wednesday from 2am until just after 8pm, and then again on Friday until 10pm when a backup generator arrived – the Housing dept. were in the process of setting up beds in the gym when it came back on (residences would have got too cold to sleep in without heating - it was around -8).
Me, Holly and 4 other exchange students went to Corner Brook for midterm break, which doorstep skiing made good and getting ‘screeched-in’ made great (I also got the cab of my life… twice).

Our final night at Corner Brook, Ian graced us with his go of Wonderwall (Nick, the guy in the blue t-shirt, is Ian's support/ owner of the bar)
